Session C: Solar Energetic Particles

Chairs: Christina Cohen, Ian Richardson

This session will focus on SEP events observed during the current solar cycle 24 by the ACE, SOHO, STEREO, and WIND spacecraft. This solar cycle follows an unusually long and deep solar minimum, and is being monitored in more detail, and from more vantage points, than any previous solar cycle. In particular, sophisticated SEP measurements comparable to those made near Earth during cycle 23 are now available from the two STEREO spacecraft.Combined with observations at Earth, SEP events may now be studied at three locations well separated in longitude.Portions of this session will be devoted to two aspects of these observations. We will first examine and discuss the longitudinal dependence of SEP characteristics such as composition, energy spectra, and time-intensity profiles, as well as the processes that govern them.We will then compare the single-point SEP measurements made during the rise of cycle 23 (and possibly earlier cycles) with the multi-point measurements of SEPs during the rise of the current cycle, in an effort to further our understanding of the cycle 23 events and to identify whether the events of the current cycle show any unusual characteristics. We invite scientists interested in these topics to participate and take advantage of the opportunity to discuss recent related results, theories, and observations. We also solicit suggestions from the community for any additional topics that would benefit from significant discussion by the attendees. Please send any such suggestions or comments to Christina Cohen (cohen@srl.caltech.edu) and Ian Richardson (ian.g.richardson@nasa.gov).

I plan to attend this session.
